INTRODUCTION

UCAT is a CLINAL APTITUTE TEST used in the selection process by a consortium of UK University dental and medical schools. The test was introduced in 2006 to help access ‘skills and attitudes’ needed by future doctors and dentists for successful clinical practice. The test covers no content covered as part of your curriculum in schools, so we recommend at least 6-8 weeks of intensive training sessions followed by a systematic test and review sessions that we provide. This test is considered by the universities as a benchmark to make more informed choices from among the highly qualified applicants. The UCAT score is used in collaboration with UCAS application, academic grades, references and interviews.

Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning section measures your cognition for critical analysis and reading comprehension. There are a total of 11 Passages in this section of the test. All questions in this part of the test primarily your ability to interpret the passage intelligibly and to find whether a particular conclusion can be drawn. This section can be divided into two sections -true, false or can’t tell questions based on a set of passages and another set of passages followed by four questions that expect you to choose a befitting inference or conclusion.

Decision Making
The Decision Making section judges your skill in making decisions based on idiosyncratic medical scenarios. This section measures your skill to make decisions that are logical to arrive at a specific conclusion. Your performance in this part of the test is a suitable yardstick of your ability to succeed with as unprecedented situation as a doctor is prone to uncertain situations. Some questions in this module present a scenario followed by 5 responses to which you need to produce only one correct viz Yes or No. You are allowed to use a virtual calculator to answer questions involving mathematical computing.

Quantitative Reasoning
This section measures your numerical and data interpretation skills. To perform well on this , you need to learn how to interpret problem solving questions involving numerals. In Quantitative Reasoning, you will be presented with text and/or tables, graphs or diagrams that you will need to interpret. You will then need to select the correct answer from among the available five options. The difficulty of questions varies from straightforward to more complex. You will often need to make multiple calculations to arrive at the correct answer, and avoid common wrong answer ‘traps’.

Abstract Reasoning
In Abstract Reasoning, you will have 55 questions to answer in just 13 minutes, which is an average of less than 15 seconds per question! Most Abstract Reasoning questions are presented in units of 5 questions, based on two ‘sets’ of images. Some questions will be individual or ‘standalone’. You will be presented with several images, and you will need to identify (and sometimes extrapolate) patterns to arrive at the correct answer.UCAT Abstract Reasoning questions can look unfamiliar and intimidating, but with practice, they become much easier to solve.

Situational Judgement
In this subtest you will be presented with 69 questions within 22 scenarios. Each scenario will be associated with between one and five questions.
You will have 26 minutes to answer all of the questions, but most students do not find Situational Judgement as time pressured as other UCAT sub tests. It is, however, often very difficult to judge which is the ‘correct’ answer. In Situational Judgement questions, you will receive full marks if you choose the correct answer, and partial marks if you choose an option that is close to the correct answer.
